A HVAC system is great, but only if it works efficiently. In addition to the discomfort of living in a home where the heating and/or air conditioning don’t work, you’ll likely be worried about the expense of fixing your HVAC system. Therefore, it is important to know how to maintain your system, and what to do if you need to replace or repair it.
Before you call someone to help you fix your system, be sure to know what sort of system you have in place. Know the brand name and model number. It is also helpful to have the maintenance history. This makes sure your contractor will be sufficiently prepared.
It is important to have some knowledge of your present system and needs before calling a contractor. This will make the quote process much easier. They need to come look at the unit. So, have this information ready.
Your outside condenser fan can be helped to run better by you cleaning the fan blades and coils prior to summer starting up. Make sure your power is off before doing more than cleaning, such as working on the unit. Leaves and debris can build up inside the unit and cause damage.
Clean the debris off your outdoor condenser unit. Debris can pile up at rates that increase during rainy or windy weather, and this can foul up the inner workings of your system. It can also cause it to overheat.
Make sure your condenser fan is in good working order by wiping down the fan blades and the coils. Before you begin cleaning the unit, make sure that it is unplugged. Then, pop off its grills, pull the blades out, and begin cleaning the unit and them gently.
Cover your unit when you are mowing the lawn. Direct the grass clippings in a direction away from the HVAC unit. This also applies when you blow leaves, so be very careful near your exterior HVAC units when you move debris.
Lubricate the oil ports on your condenser once each year. You can easily find the ports as they have a rubber or metal cap. Choose an oil graded SAE 20, it is non-detergent and lightweight. Place about 10 drops into each of the ports, taking care that it does not overfill.
Keeping your home comfortable relies on having a great HVAC system. If it isn’t, you will often be too hot or too cold in your living space. Never let this happen to you; keep in mind all the advice here to make sure that your HVAC system is providing you good air.
