How Often Should I Service My HVAC System?

One question that gets asked the most about HVAC systems service and maintenance is how often people should complete these services. While this is not always a straightforward answer, you’ll find that a minimum of two services a year can go a long way. In today’s blog, JDL HVAC will discuss how often you should be requesting HVAC system maintenance and give information and tips about this topic.

Why Should You Service Your HVAC System?

There are many reasons why doing HVAC maintenance is good for your system and every one of them benefits you in one way or another. Here are the most common reasons:

  • Saving Money — A well-maintained HVAC system works more efficiently needing less power to keep your home or room at the temperature you want. Doing services on your HVAC can also save you money in the long run by making sure that everything is working properly and there are no broken parts that can damage the system.
  • Extend the System’s Life — Doing the necessary maintenance and repairs on your HVAC system at the right time can help you enjoy your system for its intended life and avoid it breaking early.
  • Avoid Major Repairs — Small problems in your HVAC system can turn into issues that could potentially force you to change the entire unit. Getting HVAC services often can help determine these problems before they do serious damage.

Twice a Year Should Be Optimal

As we mentioned before, performing HVAC services on your unit twice a year can be considered optimal. During the spring, it is good to get your HVAC checked since your unit will most likely be working harder during the summer months to keep your home cool. Also, the fall is another good time to get HVAC maintenance done since your unit will be doing some extra work keeping your house cozy!

Consider These HVAC Tips

There are some things that might hint that your HVAC system could be having some problems or is about to cause some headaches in your life. The following list will talk about some of these issues and what they could mean:

  • Rattling Noises: This could mean that there are some parts in the HVAC unit that are loose or broken. This could turn into a serious problem due to the fact that if the parts break off, they could potentially break something else.
  • Higher Power Bill: While you can experience fluctuations in your power bill depending on how the month went (with temperatures rising or going down unexpectedly) you can have a ballpark of how much your bill should be. If you are experiencing odd amounts in your power bill, this could be that the HVAC unit is not running as efficiently as it should and it’s working harder because of it.
  • Odd Smells: If you are noticing that your HVAC system ducts are giving out odd smells, it could mean that a part of your system needs to be checked and clean. Humidity can not only put out bad smells but it can start to rot parts of your unit or feed fungus through the vents — potentially creating a health hazard.

Simple Solutions: Not all HVAC issues require a professional to assist you. There are simple things that you can do to ensure that you are taking advantage of your HVAC to the fullest.

  • Change the HVAC filter at least twice a year (we recommend every 90 days.) While this is driven by how bad the air quality is and the frequency of the usage of the system — you can settle on the middle ground and change it every 120 days or four months.
  • The air vents are the final “filter” for your HVAC system and, more often than not, a lot of dust settles on the air vents. If you let your vents get overrun by dust, you might realize that the HVAC system might be constantly working and your home is not reaching the temperature you set through the thermostat. This often happens because the vents are blocked and the air is probably coming out somewhere else — a vent cleaning service is the best solution for this problem.
